National Centre for Geophysical Research - Background

The National Centre for Geophysical Research (NCGR) was formally established in 1975. Its roots however, go back to 1920 to the Ksara Observatory (1920-1978) run by the Jesuit Fathers as the only observatory of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean for many years. The formal establishment of the centre was a major highlight of the national science policy of the Lebanese government in recognition of the geological situation of the country in a region prone to large earthquakes

The NCGR monitors in real time seismic activity in Lebanon and world wide through a seismological network. The centre has also built recently a geomagnetic observatory on its new premises in Qsaibeh (central Lebanon). This observatory is a member of the International INTERMAGNET Network.. The centre is also interested in conducting gravity and GPS surveys as well as geological exploration in order to identify active faulting and thus compile a zoning map of Lebanon.
