Induction Of An Antibacterial Activity In The Hemolymph Of The Manila Clam, Ruditapes philippinarum

Bassem Allam and Michel Auffret

In common with many invertebrates, host defense in bivalves is based largely on non-specific defense activities of circulating hemocytes and humoral factors present in the plasma. The understanding of these defense factors might allow us to manipulate the resistance or tolerance of bivalves to diseases. The present work focused on the effect of the challenge with a pathogen (the bacterium Vibrio tapetis) on antibacterial defense parameters in the hemolymph of its host (the clam Ruditapes philippinarum). Results indicate significant increase in total hemocyte counts and the induction of an antibacterial activity in the hemolymph of challenged animals. These results were discussed with emphasis on the presence in bivalve molluscs of antibacterial peptides close to those found in arthropods. Back

Hospital Waste Management Status In Lebanon

R. Karam, F. Oueida, F. Farah, F. Tissot-Guerraz, D. Trepo and C. Collombel

The existing management of hospital waste in Lebanon currently poses both an environmental hazard as well as a public health risk. This is due mainly to lack of legislation, information and modern treatment and disposal facilities designed for this purpose. A nation-wide questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the status of hospital waste management. The study started from October 1997 till August 1998. We found that 75% of the surveyed hospitals completely ignore their total waste quantity; 73% of hospitals surveyed practice segregation at source of infectious, pathological, sharps and pharmaceuticals; more than 40% dispose of their hospital risk wastes through the municipality waste disposal, 24 % by burning in open fires, 14% by on-site hospital incinerators, 11% in on-site dumping, 8% handled by a private contractor and 1% in uncontrolled landfill. We conclude that with some exceptions, the hospital waste management situation in Lebanon is very far from being satisfactory and therefore needs to be reconsidered.Back

Modality Of Fertigation Of Protected Cucumber And Nitrogen Use Efficiency In Closed Systems

Thérèse Atallah , Talal Darwish and Roger Ward

Cucumber and tomato are considered to be the most important protected vegetables in coastal Lebanon. Recent works established that in these intensive systems, irrigation and fertilization are still empirically based. Whereas techniques such as fertigation are used associated to traditional practices of soil application of fertilizers and animal manures. Due to the absence of recommendations based on local conditions, overirrigation and overfertilization are common. Furthermore, nutrients were added according to a discontinuous modality, that is with every other irrigation.
In this study, the effect of four frequencies of irrigation on protected cucumber were investigated in combination with two modalities of fertigation. The first is a discontinuous way as being practiced by the growers and the second is a continuous way as being recommended by scientists. Nitrogen fertilizers enriched with the heavy isotope 15N allowed to study their use efficiency. The results indicated that the frequency of irrigation influenced dry matter production. In the closed systems adopted in this pot experiment, the percentages of nitrogen derived from fertilizers (%Ndff) were very high ranging from 89% to 94.6%. The nitrogen fertilizers utilizations were found to be slightly different according to the modality of fertigation. The recovery of leached nitrogen and that utilized by the above-ground parts of the plant, would add up to 50% of the N fertilizers.Back

Back

Production And Properties Of Thermostable Proteases From Bacillus thermoleovorans Strain HSR

Sima Tokajian, Anwar Sunna and Fuad Hashwa

The thermophilic bacterium Bacillus thermoleovorans strain HSR secretes thermostable extracellular proteases when cultivated in the presence of tryptone. The proteases which are found to be of the metallo-protease type, showed maximal activity when incubated at 80°C and pH 7.0. The enzymes are thermostable at temperatures between 60 and 80°C in the absence of substrate. Calcium is not required for thermostability. Cu2+, Hg2+and EDTA inhibit the protease activity while Fe2+and Fe3+ ions enhanced the activity. SDS-PAGE studies indicate the presence of multiple protease activity bands with molecular masses between 40 and 57 kDa. The proteases show higher activity towards short synthetic peptides while a decrease in specificity was observed with longer peptides. Back

Oxygen And Minority Carrier Lifetimes In N- And P-Type Al0.2Ga0.8As Grown By Metalorganics Vapor Phase Epitaxy

K. Zahraman, M. Leroux, P. Gibart, G. Brémond, M.A. Zaïdi and G. Guillot

The minority carrier lifetimes in AlxGa1-xAs grown by Metal-Organics Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) is generally lower than in GaAs. This is believed to be due to oxygen incorporation in the layers. We describe a study of radiative and non radiative minority carriers lifetimes in n- and p-type Al0.2Ga0.8As as a function of growth parameters, in correlation with oxygen concentration measurements and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) studies. Long non radiative lifetimes and low oxygen contents are achieved using high temperature (780 °C) growth. A main minority hole lifetime killer appears to be a 0.4 eV deep O related electron trap detected by DLTS at concentrations three orders of magnitude lower than the atomic oxygen one. Record lifetimes in MOVPE grown n- and p-type Al0.2Ga0.8As are obtained. An Al0.85Ga0.15As/Al0.2Ga0.8As surface recombination velocity lower than 4.5x103 cm.s-1 is measured. Back

Excited States of 166Er

E.Eid and N.M.Stewart

The low lying states of 166Er are interpreted in terms of the rotational-vibrational energy as a function of I(I+1), and the Interacting Boson Model close to the SU(3) limit. The decay scheme of 166Er is established on the basis of  γ-γcoincidence studies using Ge and Ge(Li) detectors to measure the gamma rays resulting from the Β- decay of 166mHo (t 1/2 = 1200Y). Four new transitions at 351.21, 476.29, 895.59 and 1303.09 keV were observed. The first two of which are placed in the decay scheme as well as a new energy level at 1567.35 keV. Back

||Tjf|| ≤ αj||f|| pour tout j = 1,...,d et f ∈ L1(X)).

Back

A New Preconditioned Quasi-Newton Method For Optimization

Issam A.R. Moghrabi

We address in this paper quasi-Newton methods for nonlinear unconstrained optimization, concentrating on the derivation of a new updating formulae to be used in the preconditioning of the search direction in Conjugate Gradient methods. Such formula is used in obtaining at each iteration a ‘better’ set up of the inverse Hessian [or the Hessian itself], than the current estimate, by performing an alternative simple update operation that uses available iteration data, such as gradient points and iterates..Back

Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) Class I And II Frequencies In Selected Groups In Lebanon

Alexander M. Abdelnoor, May Abdelnoor, Walid Heneine, Firas Kobeissi, Sulaf Mansur, Rami Malak and Hanadi Sharara

Human Leucocyte Antigen class I (HLA-A and B) profiles were determined in 461 Lebanese subjects. These included 88 Sunnites, 149 Shiites, 50 Druze, 129 Maronites and 45 Greek Orthodox. HLA class II (HLA-DR and DQ) profiles were determined in 250 Lebanese subjects. These included 50 from each of the mentioned religious groups. The Complement Dependent Micocytotoxicity assay was used for these determinations. Frequencies for HLA epitopes in each religious sect were calculated and are presented. Such data may be important for those who are in the transplantation field and those who wish to study HLA-Disease associations.
The HLA epitope frequencies in the different religious groups studied were compared. The degree of similarity in frequencies ranged from 77% to 96%.Back
